Why doesn't my original spare key work to start my car?

Lost my keys in the snow 400 miles from home. A locksmith made a copy to start the car from a picture that was sent through a text message. At first the key would turn but the engine wouldn't start. Then he used some kind of reader/programmer with the key In the egnition to help start it. Now, my original spare does not work. It will crank the engine but it will not completely start. The keys are similar but not exactly the same.
