Water flow in fountain weakens over a few hours.?

I have a small backyard fountain that, when it's first turned on, has plenty of water flow. But as time goes on (over a few hours), the water slows to a trickle. If I turn it off for a while, when I turn it back on the strong flow returns but, again, weakens over the next few hours. What gives?
