Computer Experts: Why does my whole computer become slow when I play a video?

OK, when I play a video, even something small off of youtube, it causes my whole computer to suddenly run really slow. It doesn't happen at first, it happens about 10 minutes into the video, then everything slows down to a trickle, where I can barley run any program anymore. Any idea how to fix this?
